Student Video Contest 2019: Bins don't recycle. People do!

The District of West Vancouver challenged West Vancouver students from kindergarten to Grade 12 to submit 60 to 90-second videos on the theme Bins don’t recycle. People do!

We received over 75 student videos submissions demonstrating the benefits of reducing waste and recycling responsibly. Students did a great job showing the importance of how recycling the right way is good for our community.

A panel of judges awarded prizes for first place, first runner-up, second runner-up, honourable mention and to the classes that submitted the most videos.

Judging and Prizes

Videos were selected by a panel of judges based on whether they demonstrate creativity, an understanding of the theme, technical quality and overall message. Videos should be regionally focused on West Vancouver, include the message Bins don’t recycle. People do!, and demonstrate the benefits of reducing waste and recycling responsibly.

Fun facts

  • West Vancouver diverts an estimated 75 percent of residential waste from the landfill through our curbside and take-back recycling programs.
  • The most common recycling contaminant in our curbside programs is glass. Glass bottles and jars can break and contaminate other recyclables when not collected separately. Use your Grey Box for glass bottles and jars.
  • Since mid-2018, West Vancouver residents can recycle paper, containers and organics in civic buildings (Municipal Hall, Community Centres, etc.)
  • During the Horseshoe Bay streetscape recycling pilot, approximately 50 percent of garbage was diverted to recycling. Three-stream recycling bins are now available outdoors in Horseshoe Bay Village and additional outdoor recycling bins will soon be available in Ambleside and Dundarave.
  • The most common items we find in our public space recycling bins are disposable coffee cups. If you forget your reusable mug, disposal coffee cups belong in the containers (blue) bin.
