Rainfall warning: November 5 to 7

traffic on a rainy day - rainfall

A rainfall warning was issued this morning, with total precipitation expected to reach 40–70 mm by Thursday morning and an additional 30–40 mm by Friday morning.

Forecasts indicate the heaviest rainfall will occur this evening and tomorrow evening.

Heavy rain can create hazards like flooding and infrastructure damages. The District takes a proactive approach to storm preparedness, including:

  • regularly cleaning catch basins to help prevent blockages in the drainage system
  • activating flood control measures in preparation for storm events where rainfall of 50 mm or more is forecast
  • inspecting and clearing debris screens and creek flows before and during large rainfall events

Watercourses, including creeks, streams, and rivers, run through both public and private properties across West Vancouver. Residents can help minimize the impact of heavy rain by being prepared before a storm hits.

The District is responsible for maintaining debris screens, trash racks, and culverts located on municipal properties or within municipal rights of way. Property owners are responsible for maintaining drainage systems on private property, including creeks and watercourses.

How to prepare for heavy rain

  • remove leaves, debris, and ice from storm drains around your property to avoid flooding
  • ensure stormwater from your property is directed into storm drains and culverts, not the sanitary sewer system
  • consult a qualified professional for potential flood mitigation measures
  • sign up for Alertable notifications to receive severe weather alerts
