Bylaw officers giving away free dog treats in parks this summer

Starting in May, West Vancouver bylaw officers will be handing out dog treats during proactive park patrols to reward responsible dog owners.

To be eligible for a free dog treat, dog owners must be a West Vancouver resident and have: an active dog licence and their dog licence tag displayed, their dog on a leash in a dog-permitted area, and dog poop bags.

The dog treats are handmade in Burnaby by Big Dog Little Dog Bakery and are wheat-free, meat-free, and preservative-free. They contain oat flour, rolled oats, cheddar and parmesan cheese, olive oil, and honey.

A limited number of “golden biscuits” will be handed out at random. Dog owners who receive a golden biscuit will also receive a free 2027 dog licence. This initiative will continue throughout the summer, while supplies last.

Responsible dog owners who follow the Animal Control and Licence Bylaw help to ensure that everyone can enjoy West Vancouver’s parks, trails, and other shared public spaces.

If your dog is older than six months, it needs a West Vancouver dog licence and must wear the associated tag. This allows officers to quickly identify your dog in case of emergency and help quickly work towards a happy reunion.

Following the launch of this program in 2025, West Vancouver saw an increase in dog licence applications. The program also helped create more positive interactions between bylaw officers and park visitors, while also providing opportunities to share information about dog licensing, leash requirements, and responsible pet ownership.

Please note dog owners must follow posted regulations and should check all signage before entering any park. Dogs are not permitted on beaches, playgrounds, and school or sports fields.
