Mayor's Remembrance Day message

remebrance

On Remembrance Day, we pay tribute to the veterans who have served our country, including those who never made it home. Through remembering, we keep their stories alive and acknowledge the heroic actions which helped make our present lives possible. We also honour those currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces who continue to protect our freedom and support peace efforts around the world.

Along with Council, I would like to encourage you to take part in this day, whether by engaging with our history, reflecting and remembering, or gathering with the community at a ceremony to mark the day.

On Sunday, November 10, the Royal Canadian Legion, West Vancouver Branch, will host a Remembrance Day cemetery service at Capilano View Cemetery. The service will begin at 2 p.m. and include a laying of wreaths and a ceremony of remembrance. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Legion also holds the sacred trust of ensuring the tradition that Remembrance Day is observed by Canadians every year at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. On Remembrance Day, there will be a parade along Marine Drive, beginning at 18th Street at 10:45 a.m., which will lead to Memorial Park, where a ceremony will be held at the Memorial Arch.

Following the ceremony, the Friends of the Library will host a reception at the West Vancouver Memorial Library with light refreshments and music performed by the Dundarave Players. The Library will be open for the afternoon, where visitors can view the Veteran to Remember display, watch veteran interviews, or create handmade Valentines for Vets in the Youth Department.

We hope you join us as we gather together to mark this day of remembrance and honour those who fought and sacrificed to defend the values we hold dear.

Sincerely,
Mark Sager
Mayor
