Mayor's Remembrance Day message

remebrance

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. As we reflect on our history this Remembrance Day, we are reminded that the sacrifices of the past have an enduring legacy in the peace and security of our current lives here in West Vancouver, and in Canada.

Together with Council, I encourage you to join us in paying tribute to our veterans and those currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, who continue to risk their lives to ensure our freedom and safety.

On Sunday, November 9, the Royal Canadian Legion, West Vancouver Branch, will host a Remembrance Day cemetery service at Capilano View Cemetery, open to all members of the public. The service will begin at 2 p.m. and include a laying of wreaths and a ceremony of remembrance.

On Remembrance Day, there will be a parade along Marine Drive, beginning at 18th Street at 10:45 a.m., which will lead to Memorial Park, where a ceremony will be held at the Memorial Arch. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Following the ceremony, the Friends of the Library will host a reception at the West Vancouver Memorial Library with light refreshments and music performed by the Dundarave Players. The library will be open for the afternoon, where visitors can watch veteran interviews, view the Research to Remember displays, and learn more about the local soldiers whose names are inscribed on the Memorial Arch.

This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Memorial Library, which first opened on November 11, 1950. Founded as a living memorial to those who served and gave their lives in World War II, the Memorial Library continues to honour that legacy as a place of learning and connection that welcomes everyone in our community.

We hope you will join us as we gather in remembrance and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Lest we forget.

With gratitude,
Mark Sager
Mayor
