Heavy Vehicle Routes

Trucks, trailers and truck tractor/ tractor-trailer combinations in excess of 11,800 kg GVW are prohibited from travelling downhill on most streets below the Upper Levels Highway and certain other streets.

Violating the heavy vehicle regulations will result in an immediate fine of $500, and could result in fines of up to $10,000 and up to 60 days in jail.

To Enter West Vancouver

Heavy vehicles can only enter the areas below the Upper Levels Highway west of Taylor Way at either:

  • Horseshoe Bay from either Hwy 1 exit #3 (ferry terminal exit) or Marine Drive

    NOTE: Heavy vehicles will get stuck at the roundabout at Nelson Avenue—heavy vehicles are NOT permitted to use Nelson Avenue northbound Marine Drive to Chatham Street. Violations are enforced. See below for details.

  • Eagleridge Hwy exit #2 Eagleridge Drive is prohibited
  • Marine Drive may be used wherever it can be accessed without using a restricted route.
  • Caulfeild Village Shopping Centre can be accessed from the Upper Levels Highway but heavy vehicles are not permitted beyond the shopping centre on steep sections of Headland Drive.

To Enter Horseshoe Bay Village

Heavy vehicles will get stuck at the roundabout at Nelson Avenue—heavy vehicles are NOT permitted to use Nelson Avenue northbound Marine Drive to Chatham Street. Violations are enforced.

Horseshoe Bay Village may only be accessed by Heavy Vehicles via Exit 3, Highway 1/99 westbound:

  • From Highway 1/99 westbound, use Exit 3 toward Horseshoe Bay Village. Directions.
  • From Highway 1/99 southbound, use exit 4 (u-turn route) to turn around and then use Exit 3 for Horseshoe Bay Village. Directions.
  • From Marine Drive, enter Highway 1 eastbound, use exit 4 (u-turn route) to turn around and use Exit 3 for Horseshoe Bay Village. Directions.

To Exit West Vancouver 

Heavy vehicles can only exit West Vancouver using one of the following routes:

  • uphill to the Upper Levels Highway
  • along Marine Drive to Taylor Way
  • along Marine Drive to Horseshoe Bay

Exemptions 

Written applications for exemptions can be made to the Director, of Engineering & Transportation Services. These are usually limited to areas close to the Upper Levels Highway that involve limited downhill travel.
