West Vancouver implements closures in response to Coronavirus
Friday, March 13, 2020, West Vancouver, BC – The District of West Vancouver is closing the Seniors’ Activity Centre, the weight rooms at the Gleneagles Community Centre and Aquatic Centre, the Gymnastics Gym at the Community Centre and the Spin Studio at Gleneagles Community Centre. The Aquatic Centre has been closed for seasonal maintenance and will remain closed. All of these closures are effective March 14 until further notice.
The West Vancouver Community Centre, West Vancouver Memorial Library, Ice Arena, Gleneagles Clubhouse, Gleneagles Community Centre and other District facilities will remain open at this time. District staff are assessing the situation and the recommendations of the health authorities and may potentially take additional measures. Food service at the Seniors’ Activity Centre will continue on a take-out basis between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., seven days a week.
“We are taking these measures out of concern for the health and well-being of our community and, in particular, our seniors. We will continue to provide take-out food options from the Seniors’ Activity Centre because we know many members of our community rely on this and it’s vital to their health and well-being,” said Mayor Mary-Ann Booth. “Seniors and people with compromised immune systems are the most vulnerable members of our population. By closing these facilities, we hope to slow down and contain the inevitable spread of Coronavirus.”
In response to the provincial ban on mass gatherings, and to preserve the legitimacy of our engagement processes, the District is also postponing all in-person public engagement on District initiatives and development applications until further notice. Further measures will be considered in regards to public meetings, public gatherings and public facilities, as the need arises.
Members of the public have been advised by BC’s Medical Health Officer not to travel outside of the country, and to self-isolate for 14 days upon returning home from outside Canada. To prevent the spread of Coronavirus and protect your health, and the health of those around you, please:
- Stay home if you are sick
- If you think you may have symptoms of Coronavirus, call 8-1-1 for an assessment
- Practice good hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing (such as coughing into your elbow or using a tissue) and avoid touching your face
