West Vancouver's Lalji family donates $700,000 to the West Vancouver Community Centres Society
The West Vancouver Community Centres Society and the District of West Vancouver are extremely pleased to announce a $700,000 donation from the Lalji family. This generous donation by the Lalji family will enhance programs, services and equipment at the West Vancouver Community Centre, Aquatics Centre and Ice Arena to benefit the community. In recognition of this gift, the West Vancouver Community Centre Atrium will be named the Lalji Family Atrium.
The Laljis, long-time residents of West Vancouver, first came to Canada in the 1970s after fleeing Uganda and made West Vancouver their home. Three generations of family members have lived in the community and they have deep social, cultural and business roots in West Vancouver. The family is proud to support the society and the great work that they do at the West Vancouver Community Centre, a facility regarded by many as the heart of West Vancouver.
“Our family immigrated to Canada for a better life and calling West Vancouver home has been a privilege. The West Vancouver Community Centre is a special place where neighbours and friends of all ages, cultures and ethnicity gather. The inclusiveness and support it provides to old and new community members aligns with our values and we are fortunate to be giving back to a community that has been so good to us,” says Mansoor Lalji.
The District of West Vancouver is pleased to recognize the Lalji family for this generous donation, says Mayor Michael Smith. “The atrium at the community centre is an amazing space that brings people together,” says Smith. “It’s very fitting that this community hub should be named in honour of the Lalji family’s generous gift to the community.”
Jeff Todd, Chair of the West Vancouver Community Centres Society added: “This really is an extraordinarily generous gift from the Lalji family. It will allow us to do so much more in terms of programs and services for the people of West Vancouver who use our facilities. It is a gift to the entire community from one of its deep-rooted families.”
The West Vancouver Community Centres Society is a membership-driven charitable organization that jointly operates the West Vancouver Community Centre, Aquatic Centre and the Ice Arena with the District of West Vancouver.
