Join us for the Ambleside Youth Centre Farewell Event
The Ambleside Youth Centre, operated by the District of West Vancouver, has been closed since January and the decision has been made to close the building permanently.
Located at 1018 Pound Road, the youth centre has been a home to programs, drop-in and special events for 22 years, despite the fact that the building was never built to house youth programs and services. It was built in the 1940s by the Department of National Defence and re-purposed in the 1950s to house the West Vancouver Rod & Gun Club. In 1996 it was repurposed again to become the Ambleside Youth Centre.
On January 3, 2019, a partial ceiling collapse occurred. The building was closed immediately to ensure the safety of community and staff, and a building condition review was undertaken with an eye to repairing the damage.
Immediately after the building was closed, youth programs and supporting staff were relocated to the West Vancouver Community Centre and Gleneagles Community Centre, and drop-in hours at the West Vancouver Community Centre Youth Lounge were extended. Youth Outreach Workers continue to meet 1:1 with youth-at-risk at various locations in the community.
However, the building review determined that the damage was greater than originally thought, and significant repairs would be required before the building could be used again. Estimates indicate a cost of $1.3 – $1.85 million, and as a result, the decision was made not to repair the building.
“Ambleside Youth Centre has really been a beloved building and “rec room” for young people in our community for many years. It’s very sad when a well-used place full of good memories closes, “says Mayor Mary-Ann Booth. “Council and staff are committed to continuing to provide excellent services to youth by using other existing youth spaces, and, in the longer term, planning for some form of dedicated youth centre.” She continued, “But youth services is not about buildings, it’s about people, and programs and services, and I know our dedicated Youth Services team will continue to provide exceptional support to our youth.”
